Firstly, separate the unwanted into cardboard, metal, appliances, green waste, concrete stone bricks and ceramics, etc. and other general rubbish.
Waste like cardboard, metal can usually be recycled, and is free in most tipping centers. Appliances may be free in some transfer stations, and will be charged in other tip centers.
Normally green waste is not heavy, when we collect green waste from customers, filling a 20 cubic meters truck box is always about 400kg-500kg only (many transfer centers charge green waste on cubic meters, which will cost you a lot more).
If you have a large pile of green waste, use a truck to dump them. Otherwise either put a small amount into your green bin week by week, or tile up into bundles, book or wait for councils’ hard waste collection. Or go to a tip center mixed with other junk (this will be charged as general waste as a whole).
Concrete, stone, bricks, tiles and ceramics are pretty heavy even for a small pile, the cheapest way is to hire a skip bin (minimum 2 cubic meters).

From 01/07/2026, for most tip centers in Melbourne, general waste normally charges around $400/tonne, green waste $150-$250/tonne, concrete bricks ceramics $120-$130/tonne.
